IPMVP Option A, B, C, and D Explained
A quick reference to the four IPMVP M&V options and when to use each one in an energy audit.
The International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) defines four options for measuring and verifying energy savings.
**Option A — Retrofit Isolation: Key Parameter Measurement** Measure the key performance parameter that defines savings, while using stipulated values for others. Good for simple measures with well-understood performance.
**Option B — Retrofit Isolation: All Parameter Measurement** Measure all key parameters at the project level. Suitable for more complex ECMs where both consumption and demand matter.
**Option C — Whole Facility** Use whole-facility utility data to verify savings. Useful when multiple measures interact and individual isolation is impractical.
**Option D — Calibrated Simulation** Use a calibrated energy model to predict baseline and post-retrofit consumption. Required when no historical baseline exists or when major changes occur.
Each option trades accuracy, cost, and complexity. Edinergy drafts an M&V plan matched to each recommended measure.
